Harbor House Recognizes Guys with Ties Efforts

January 1st, 2009

We at Harbor House of Central Florida pride ourselves on the fact that we work hand in hand with the broader non-profit community to ensure that our families have all their needs met.

About 2 months ago Claudette Longoria introduced me to a representative of Autism Speaks at a Guys with Ties happy hour event.  Later that same week I realized that we had a family at the emergency shelter in need of assistance with their profoundly autistic child.  I called Claudette who immediately put me in touch with the representative with Autism Speaks and we scheduled a meeting.

The Representatives came out to the emergency shelter and met with the Children Services Manager and the parent and immediately began to assist this family in need.  Ultimately the resources for this family were not available here in Orlando, due to a ten year wait for placement in a school for autistic children.  But, we as a team were able to place this family in the correct program in another state.

Last week the family left the emergency shelter on a 12 hour ride to their new home and new life. The parent will now be able to work in her chosen field of translation as her child will now be cared for properly in a school for profoundly autistic children.

If it was not for Claudette and the whole Guys with Ties team this would not have been possible!

Thank you for all that you do for the Central Florida Community…

Regards,

Joy Haslacker, Harbor House of Central Florida
